Waterproofing Surface Preperation

Waterproofing Surface Types

Solvent Base Waterproofing:
Poured Concrete Slabs & Walls, C.M.U.'s

All surfaces shall be clean, dry, free of frost, dew, dirt, grease, release agents and other foreign contaminants and debris.

Concrete shall have cured a minimum of 30 days. Water or paper curing of horizontal slabs is preferred.

Masonry surfaces shall have flush joints free of extraneous mortar, chipped or broken masonry. Sharp ridges should be ground smooth. Horizontal concrete surfaces shall be steel troweled or wood floated to a smooth level surface. Vertical surfaces shall be smooth, sound and free of honeycombs. Any metal surfaces shall be free of rust, scale, paint or other forms of contamination.

Construction & Expansion Joints should be a minimum of 3/4" wide. Closed cell polyurethane backer rod is inserted to the required depth. The sealant depth shall be at least equal to the width of the joint.

All cracks and non-working joints over 1/8" width shall be filled using the trowel grade material of the system being employed.

Solvent Base Dampproofing Cements & Coatings:
Poured concrete, C.M.U Walls

Surfaces must be clean, dry and free from oil, grease, release agents, laitance, dirt, dust and debris. All cracks and pin holes should be repaired and filled with a trowel mastic of the same base material as the dampproofing coating prior to application of the dampproofing material.

Note: If the substrate surface is very porous, it is recommended that an asphalt primer be utilized to provide a firm base prior to application of the dampproofing coating.

Emulsion (Water Base) Dampproofing Cements & Coatings:
Poured concrete, C.M.U Walls
Cavity wall construction

Surface should be free of oil, grease, dirt, laitance and loose material. Surfaces may be slightly damp when applying emulsion dampproofing. All cracks and holes should be repaired and filled with a trowel mastic of the same base(emulsion) material as the dampproofing coating prior to application of the dampproofing material.

Note: If the substrate surface is very porous, it is recommended that an asphalt primer be utilized to provide a firm base prior to application of the dampproofing coating.
